SEOUL, South Korea (AP) 

During a joint live-fire drill with the United States on Wednesday, a South Korean ballistic missile malfunctioned and crashed into the ground.

The sound of the explosion and resulting fire caused many people in Gangneung to believe it might be a North Korean attack.

The accident involving a short-range Hyumoo-2 ballistic missile took place at an air force base on the outskirts of the city.
